Retrofitting the Region for Economic Success – St. Louis

On September 23, 2011 Citizens for Modern Transit hosted our 27th Annual Meeting.  This year’s meeting featured guest speaker Scott Bernstein, President and CEO of the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT).  Mr. Bernstein presented “Retrofitting the Region for Economic Success – St. Louis” a fact-filled presentation that detailed commuting patterns, housing and transportation costs, and how investment in transit could serve as an economic windfall for the St. Louis region. Bernstein uses the Housing & Transportation Affordability Index measure the true affordability of housing in St. Louis based on its location.  The idea being that the further someone lives from the urban core the more they spend on transportation. Often these added transportation costs are overlooked because they are amortized over the course of a year. The presentation is tailored to St. Louis, however many of the key point apply to other cities. We urge you to check out the presentation and see how your city compares on the H+T Affordability Index.
