Citizens for Modern Transit (CMT) is teaming up with the St. Clair County Transit District (SCCTD) and AARP in St. Louis to activate the space around a bus stop in East St. Louis, Ill., located at 2510 State Street. This joint initiative, known as the “Transit Stop Transformation Project,” will transform the area around the bus stop – into a safe, bright, user-friendly space that cultivates increased transit use, safety and security while promoting the surrounding jobs and retail corridor. Transit riders, residents, businesses and elected officials are encouraged to provide their thoughts on what they would like to see at the stop via an online survey. Suggestions will help transform this space into a safe, engaging bus stop for those coming and going to a resource rich area of the community.
A transit stop can serve as a transformational tool to reconnect a community, promote social equality, increase accessibility, position an area for growth, activate and beautify the public space, and enhance neighborhood safety. This stop is served by Metro Bus # 1 (State and Main) and Metro Bus # 8 (Alta Sita). These two routes carry 47% of all transit riders in St. Clair County– with connections to MetroLink and beyond.
This project would include a community engagement component, and the St. Clair County Transit District will be responsible for maintenance of the project moving forward. Trivers has been selected for the design.
