Metro Transit Announces Fare Collection System Update

Metro Transit will roll out new fare collection equipment and features later this year. Changes will impact both MetroBus and MetroLink vehicles, with the ultimate goal of streamlining and simplifying the fare collection process for riders.

MetroBus:

Starting this month, Just Ride Validators (JRVs) will go live on MetroBuses. These devices are installed next to the operator and will allow a rider to scan a mobile pass purchased on the Transit App. This summer, Metro will introduce the Metro App, a new app that will allow riders to manage and purchase passes, track their trip history, and more. The Transit App will remain an option as well.

MetroLink:

Starting in 2026 upon the completion of Metro Transit’s Secure Platform Plan (SPP), all MetroLink station security gates will be integrated with the new fare system. MetroLink riders will see changes including QR codes, tap-to-ride features, and updated Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs).

Another fare change to look forward to in 2026 is the introduction of an account-based transit card. This card will allow you to pre-purchase and pre-load passes and tickets, allowing you to more efficiently plan ahead and manage your travel expenses. The card will be enhanced with security features allowing you to protect the card if it is lost or stolen.
