Metro Transit Accessibility Update

Metro Transit recently provided an update on the status of multiple accessibility-related projects currently underway.

MetroGo! App: MetroGo! is an app that may be downloaded from the Apple App store or Google Play store. The app allows Call-A-Ride users to schedule and cancel trips, use a debit or credit card to pay fare, and even see when their Call-A-Ride vehicle will arrive.

Visually Impaired Wayfinding Pilot Project: Metro Transit is launching a pilot project to test new technology designed to make wayfinding for the visually impaired more accessible. Metro Transit is working with GoodMaps, an app that allows for improved navigation over traditional GPS, to map out the Civic Center Transit Center.

Simultaneously, Metro Transit is working with NaviLens, an app that allows codes to be read and information to be shared with the person using the app, to develop codes to be placed on signs at the Civic Center Transit Center. For instance, a code on a sign could be “read” by the app and relay critical wayfinding information to a visually impaired individual trying to locate a specific bus stop.

Metro Transit Accessibility Advisory Committee: The committee is composed of 15 members of the community who meet on a bi-monthly basis to address issues of accessibility and usability for all of Metro Transit’s service modes. The committee met for the third time in March and has plans to form sub-committees that will prioritize training and accessibility. Bi-monthly committee meetings are open to the public.
