Join Citizens for Modern Transit (CMT), AARP in St. Louis and the St. Clair County Transit District as the partnering organizations celebrate the first bus bench installations as part of “The Story of a Bench” placemaking program. The ribbon cutting ceremony will get underway on Wednesday, June 4 at 9 a.m. at MetroBus Stop #11223 – Walgreens, located 2532 North Illinois Street, in Swansea, Ill. The other bench was installed at MetroBus Stop #11303 – McDonald’s just north of Fullerton Road at 2600 North Illinois Street.
The goal of the program is to help build better bus stops through the addition of a basic amenity – a bench. The intent is to place a minimum of five benches in the program’s inaugural year.
CMT and AARP in St. Louis are currently seeking additional partners – including businesses, organizations, municipalities, community groups and individuals – willing to support a bus bench installation in their local community. . The benches are provided free of charge to community partners who agree to take on installation and maintenance costs, which are approximately $4,000 to 5,000 per bench.
