Join Citizens for Modern Transit, St. Clair County Transit District, AARP in St. Louis and Metro Transit as they unveil the region’s latest “Transit Stop Transformation” Project – this time at the Fairview Heights Transit Center, located at 9720 W. Route 161 in Fairview Heights, Ill.. The event will get underway at 9 a.m. on Aug. 21, with formal remarks from Mayor Mark Kupsky of the City of Fairview Heights and project partners. This will be followed by a ribbon cutting and the chance for attendees to explore the transformed space and enjoy refreshments.
The project transforms the concrete area between the bus bays and MetroLink entrance as well as the grassy area across from the entrance to MetroLink into an interactive, playful and engaging space.
The “Transit Stop Transformation” project at the Fairview Heights Transit Center is the sixth transformation of its kind in the St. Louis region. Transformations were also completed at the Emerson Park Transit Center and Fifth and Missouri Transit Center in East St. Louis, a MetroBus stop in Maplewood, the Belleville Transit Center in Belleville, and the N. Hanley Transit Center in unincorporated St. Louis County. Each project showcases a deep understanding of and commitment to equitable development around transit, the possibility of play, the ability for creative interventions to produce long-term impact for residents of all ages and the need for collaboration to succeed.
The partners work with stakeholders to build consensus and policies to move permanent development forward – and ultimately establish lasting developments at transit stops that are helping to improve safety and security, build ridership and increase activity around transit. Since the inception of the Transit Transformation program, there has been an additional $33 million in investments at the first five stations completed. Each project is maintained via partner commitments to ensure sustainability for years to come. A seventh transformation is in the works at a MetroBus stop at 13th and Gravois in the City of St. Louis.
