Ten Toes + Transit

Citizens for Modern Transit sponsors the Ten Toes + Transit program to help individuals lead healthier lives by linking activity, sociability, and exercise with the use of MetroLink and MetroBus.

Walks range from 0.3 to 5 miles, depending on the group and destination.

Walking groups meet at MetroLink stations or MetroBus stops, take transit to their destination and then walk in a variety of places such as parks, museums, trails, neighborhoods, and more. Groups often finish at a unique shop or stop for lunch or a snack before heading back.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This program has introduced more than 10,000 individuals to the region’s transit system and the places they can go using it. There are 10 volunteer led walking groups that go out each week and explore the St. Louis region.

What our walkers say

“Anyone looking for an opportunity to meet new people, get out and explore all that St. Louis has to offer, and gain confidence in utilizing public transit should look into joining the Ten Toes + Transit program!”
-Sara Feagans
I joined the program for the exercise, but I soon began using public transport several times a week just to get around. I love being free of a car whenever possible. There’s no going back for me!
-Joanne Fritz
I joined the walking group because I am a strong supporter of public transit – both the bus and MetroLink – and I love to walk. I look forward to the socialization and exploring new areas I am not familiar with.
-Jane Taylor
I enjoy participating in the program because I get to experience familiar and new places with interesting peers – and I’ve made new friendship.
-Helen Fisher
I think the public perception is that public transit isn't safe and that isn't the case. I ride the MetroBus a couple times a week and even more before I retired. I feel plenty safe, even more safe than driving: Exploring with a group of people will help people feel safe and lead to more riders.
-Jane Taylor
I lead a group to get my steps in and because I enjoy being a tourist in my own city. It is a safe program, and we are not speed walkers. We tour and try to eat at a restaurant we would normally not eat at.
