Metro Transit has announced that new technology is on the way that will make riding transit in the St. Louis region smoother, faster, and more secure. Those upgrades will include modern fare validators, reloadable smart cards, and even a new mobile app.
In the past year, MetroBus vehicles have been installed with tap-to-go fare validators that allow riders with mobile tickets to scan the ticket on their mobile device and board swiftly and efficiently. A sound and green light confirm for the rider that their ticket has been accepted. Reduced-fare riders see a yellow light which prompts them to show their identification to the operator.
In coming months, the same tap-to-go technology will be added to MetroLink station gates where the gates will automatically open after a rider successfully scans their pass. New ticket vending machines will be introduced, along with the Ride On Smart Card, a reloadable card that will be complemented by the Ride On App which will allow riders to purchase passes, add funds, check their balance, and even share accounts with family members. Cash payments will continue to be accepted.
These upcoming changes are part of Metro’s ongoing investment in the Secure Platform Plan, which combines technology and design to enhance safety, improve efficiency, and ensure a more enjoyable experience for all riders. Learn more on Metro’s website here.
