Metro Transit just released its July update on the Secure Platform Plan which includes a Real Time Camera Center, gating and fencing, and a revamped fare collection program. According to Metro Transit, measurable improvements are already being seen at stations where upgrades have been completed at 11 stations.   Impacts include the following:

  • Increased ridership. Initial data indicates a noticeable increase in ridership at the stations completed.
  • Reduction in incidents. Metro Transit Security has seen a decrease in safety-related incidents.  The number of incidents have fallen to 6 incidents per 100,000 boardings which according to the agency reflects a reduction in disorderly conduct, fare evasion and public safety concerns on secured platforms.

Based on feedback from the riding community and a CMT hosted panel discussion on June 5, Metro Transit made a change to improve the customer experience during SPP construction.  Metro Transit implemented a modification to the gating system; gates will remain open during periods when no security team member is present.  This ensures riders are able to move freely during unstaffed periods to ensure connections to trains and buses.
