During the June 12, 2026 Bi-State Development Board of Commissioners meeting, the board voted to authorize the President and CEO to negotiate and finalize an agreement with the City of St. Louis Sheriff’s Office to provide security services for MetroLink trains, platforms, and transit centers within the City of St. Louis.
The proposed agreement would shift primary patrol responsibilities for MetroLink properties in the City of St. Louis from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) to the Sheriff’s Office. The change comes as SLMPD continues to face staffing challenges.
Under the proposed agreement, the Sheriff’s Office would provide one lieutenant, one sergeant, and eight deputies to transit security. As proposed, the first year of the agreement is estimated to cost $921,262, including a one-time start-up expense of $77,988. The second year is project to cost $843,274.
By comparison, t current one-year agreement with SLMPD, which expires at the end of June, provides staffing for one captain, one sergeant, and three police officers at a cost of $785,686.
