The Bi-State Board of Commissioners approved a request to issue a sole source contract of $6 million to KCI Construction to rehabilitate the existing track structure within, and west of the Union Station Tunnel at its May 14, 2026 meeting.
On, June 11, 2024, Bi-State Development (BSD) issued solicitation for the Union Station Tunnel Rehabilitation, and as a result of the procurement process, an award was made to KCI Construction. The current tunnel rehabilitation project is scheduled for completion in early 2028. The Metro Maintenance of Way Department has determined that the MetroLink track and ballast within the tunnel and just west of the tunnel is in need of replacement.
Additionally, the vertical profile will be adjusted to increase the clearance in the tunnel, consistent with changes in industry standards, since the tracks were originally installed in 1993. The resulting increase in clearance will also help significantly reduce the possibility of electrical arcing, which can be a serious maintenance and safety concern. While the track is being replaced, as part of the process of increasing the vertical clearance, the top section of the MSD sewer, which the Metrolink tracks cross over, will be removed and replaced with a resized structural concrete lid.
The contract end date is February 28, 2027.
