What is MAP-21?

The Federal Transit Administration’s MAP-21, or Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century, was signed into law at the beginning of July by President Obama.  This will extend SAFETEA-LU through September 30, 2012, and will go into full effect after through September 30, 2014.

MAP-21 will provide a steady flow of funding for FTA grantees, condense certain transit programs for increased efficiency, increase target funding for improving the state of good repair, and will create new safety requirements for all recipients to name a few items.

Among the specific funding allocations, $420 million has been authorized for fiscal year 2013 to replace, rehab and purchase new buses and associated equipment.  An amount yet-to-be-determined will go towards repairing and replacing equipment which have suffered serious damage.  $10 million will be allocated to create a pilot program for TOD (transit oriented development) planning grants.  $255 million will be funded for enhancing the mobility of senior citizens and those with disabilities.
